Mamata Banerjee Raises Concerns Over IAS, IPS Transfers Ahead of West Bengal Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 16 (NationPress) - West Bengal's Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, reached out to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Monday, voicing her concerns regarding the abrupt transfer of numerous IAS and IPS officers in the state following the Assembly elections announcement.
In her letter, CM Banerjee contended that these widespread transfers were executed without substantial justification and without any accusations of electoral misconduct or failures.
"It is profoundly concerning and surprising that the leadership of West Bengal's administrative framework has been altered within mere hours of the announcement of the General Election for the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, 2026. This has been conducted in a hasty manner, disregarding the established procedure of consulting a panel of officers from the state government, and violating the norms that have traditionally governed the ECI-state interactions during past elections," the Chief Minister articulated.
This incident follows a significant reshuffle initiated by the Election Commission within the state administration.
The overnight changes saw Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty and Home Secretary J.P. Meena reassigned. Additionally, several high-ranking police officials, including the Director General of Police and the Kolkata Police Commissioner, were also dismissed from their positions.
The reshuffle occurred just hours after the Election Commission had officially announced the upcoming Assembly elections.
CM Banerjee protested against these measures, stating that they compromise the essence of cooperative federalism and the tenets of democratic governance.
“Such actions also undermine the essence of cooperative federalism and the principles that underpin our democratic structure, which are fundamental to our constitutional system. The Election Commission of India, as a prominent constitutional authority, is expected to exercise its powers responsibly while preserving the integrity and values of India's federal framework,” she emphasized in her correspondence.
Furthermore, CM Banerjee appealed to the Election Commission to avoid such unilateral actions in the future, asserting that they jeopardize the credibility and institutional integrity of the electoral body.
