Why did the ECI issue a hearing notice to Amartya Sen?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 7 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) provided further insights on Wednesday regarding the rationale behind the hearing notice issued to Nobel Laureate and economist Dr. Amartya Sen concerning claims and objections related to the draft voters’ list.
On Tuesday, following accusations from Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress and a Lok Sabha MP, suggesting that the Commission acted without necessity in issuing the notice to Dr. Sen, the ECI initially explained that the notice was prompted by certain logical discrepancies due to a spelling error in the enumeration form.
Furthermore, the Commission reiterated that while the notice is standard procedure in cases of logical discrepancies, Dr. Sen is not required to attend the hearing in person.
On Wednesday, the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal issued a statement elaborating that another factor contributing to the logical discrepancy was an age gap of less than 15 years between Dr. Sen and his mother.
The CEO's office confirmed that the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) and the Booth Level Officer (BLO) visited Dr. Sen's ancestral home in Bolpur-Santiniketan, located in the Birbhum district of West Bengal, to finalize the necessary procedures.
According to the statement, “The Enumeration Form for Shri Amartya Sen, classified as an overseas elector, was submitted by his family member, Shri Shantabhanu Sen, who linked him to his mother, Smt. Amita Sen. The logical discrepancy arose because the age difference between the elector and his mother was below 15 years, which was flagged by the ERO Net Portal. The notice was generated for Dr. Amartya Sen in line with other similar cases. Given that he is over 85 years old, both the ERO/AERO and BLO visited his residence to complete the necessary formalities.”
Dr. Sen's ancestral residence is in Bolpur-Santiniketan, and despite residing in the United States as a non-resident Indian, he remains a registered voter there.
His last participation in voting at Bolpur-Santiniketan was during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
