Kolkata, July 4 (NationPress) Former Rajya Sabha member of the Trinamool Congress, Santanu Sen, has filed a petition with the Calcutta High Court contesting the two-year suspension of his medical registration imposed by the West Bengal Medical Council. A single-judge bench led by Justice Amrita Sinha has accepted Sen's petition. Sen, a practicing physician, was recently expelled from the Trinamool Congress due to allegations of anti-party activities that arose from his disagreements with party leadership regarding the R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital incident involving rape and murder last year, where he is also an alumnus.
After submitting his petition, Sen asserted that the suspension of his medical registration was unjust and rooted in personal vendetta from certain members of the council. “I will not silently endure this injustice,” he stated.
Throughout the suspension period, Sen is prohibited from using the title “Dr” before his name and cannot write prescriptions for patients. The suspension was enacted due to allegations that he improperly referenced his postgraduate qualification, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Glasgow), on his letterhead without proper registration with the state medical council.
Sen has vehemently denied these allegations, claiming he provided all necessary documentation for the qualification registration with the council and paid the required fee of Rs 10,000.
“I followed up with numerous letters and emails to the council to inquire about the status of my registration. I even filed an application under the RTI Act. Yet, I received no responses. I feel victimized,” Sen mentioned.
Previously, Sen served as a representative for the state government in the West Bengal Medical Council for an extended period. However, following his conflicts with party leadership regarding the R.G. Kar incident, he faced suspension from the party and was subsequently removed from the council.
