Trinamool Rebel Doctor Leader Ousted from West Bengal Medical Council

Kolkata, Dec 6 (NationPress) Former Rajya Sabha member and Trinamool Congress dissident, Santanu Sen, a medical professional, has been dismissed from his position as a state-nominated member of the West Bengal Medical Council.
Sen became a dissident following the tragic incident involving the rape and murder of a junior female doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata in August this year, during which he made statements that caused significant discomfort for his party.
Recently, Trinamool legislator and Council President, Sudipto Roy, who is also in the medical field, sent a formal request to the state Health & Family Welfare department, advocating for Sen’s dismissal from his role.
In his correspondence with Principal Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, Narayan Swarup Nigam, Roy articulated that Sen should be removed due to his absence in six straight council meetings since January 1, 2024, without a valid excuse, thus warranting his position to be considered vacated.
Ultimately, the Health & Family Welfare Department concurred with Roy's recommendation and announced on Friday that Sen has been removed from the council.
Nonetheless, the state government has yet to reveal who will take over Sen’s position.
Sources within the state government indicated that an announcement regarding the new appointee is anticipated next week. A rift between Roy and Sen began to intensify following the R.G. Kar incident, as Sen voiced criticism against certain aspects of the state healthcare system. The situation escalated further due to the central agency investigation into financial discrepancies at R.G. Kar, during which Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials conducted raids at Roy's residence and hospital in north Kolkata, and interrogated him at the central agency office.
