Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 24 (NationPress) On Tuesday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) organized a pivotal meeting with senior officials from states preparing for upcoming elections and their adjacent regions. This initiative aimed to fortify collaboration and guarantee that the elections are conducted in a manner that is free, fair, and peaceful.
Key figures in administration and law enforcement, including Chief Secretaries, Directors General of Police (DGPs), Principal Secretaries (Home and Excise), State Focal Points for Seizure Tracking (SFST), and State Police Nodal Officers (SPNOs), participated in this crucial assembly.
The primary goal was to improve inter-state coordination, address intelligence shortfalls, and optimize enforcement strategies as the elections approach.
Simultaneously, the Commission engaged with the Multi-Departmental Committee on Election Intelligence (MDCEI) to discuss measures against illegal activities such as the circulation of unaccounted cash, liquor, drugs, and other incentives that may sway voters.
The ECI emphasized the necessity for real-time information exchange, coordinated border inspections, and enhanced surveillance to ensure elections are devoid of inducements.
Reiterating its strict stance against electoral misconduct, the Commission highlighted the need for seamless collaboration among neighboring states to control cross-border movements of individuals and goods and to maintain public order during the electoral process.
According to the announced timeline, polls in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry are set for April 9, while Tamil Nadu's election will take place on April 23. West Bengal will experience a two-phase election on April 23 and April 29, with vote counting scheduled for May 4.
Previously, on Monday, the Commission conducted an online assessment and training session with District Election Officers (DEOs), Superintendents of Police (SPs), Commissioners of Police (CPs), and other senior personnel from West Bengal to review their readiness and reinforce guidelines for smooth polling procedures.
Additionally, the ECI dismissed 73 Returning Officers (ROs) in West Bengal on the same day in preparation for the elections.
