Kolkata, Nov 30 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India announced on Sunday a significant extension of the current three-stage Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in 12 Indian states and union territories (UTs) by a full week.
Initially, the deadline for the collection and digitization of voters' enumeration forms was set for December 4. The new deadline is now December 11.
Additionally, the date for the rationalization or rearrangement of polling stations has also been set for December 11.
The publication date for the draft electoral roll, which was originally scheduled for December 9, has been pushed back to December 16.
As per the revised schedule, the window for filing claims and objections is now open from December 16, 2025, to January 15, 2026.
The notice phase, which encompasses the issuance, hearing, verification, and decision regarding enumeration forms, will take place between December 16, 2025, and February 7, 2026.
The new date for verifying health parameters of electoral rolls and obtaining the ECI’s approval for final publication is now set for February 10, 2026.
Moreover, the final publication of the electoral roll has been rescheduled to February 14, shifting from its previous date of February 7.
Resistance against the ECI’s handling of the SIR process has been voiced by opposition parties, who accuse the commission of acting hastily at the request of the BJP. The Trinamool Congress has been particularly vocal in its criticism.
Political reactions regarding this extension are still pending. However, a member from West Bengal, speaking under the condition of anonymity, described the seven-day extension as merely a façade. “Any formal statement will likely come from our Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee or our party’s general secretary Abhishek Banerjee,” he remarked.
