Thiruvananthapuram, March 27 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) intervened on Friday amidst the uproar surrounding the removal of a segment from an interview featuring Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan, conducted by Manorama News and reportedly influenced by the Kerala Police. Officials suggested that it's the responsibility of the Kerala Police to clarify the reasons behind the video's deletion.

On the same day, Kerala’s Chief Electoral Officer Rathan U. Kelkar stated that the controversy stemmed from inappropriate comments made in the video’s comment section.

“The intention was solely to eliminate the comments, but the entire video was mistakenly removed,” he explained, noting that this action was part of their cyber surveillance efforts.

Kelkar also mentioned that dialogues with Meta are ongoing, and assured that the video would be reinstated soon if a formal complaint is lodged.

The video in question was a reel from an interview conducted by Manorama News Director Johny Lukose.

It faced a block in India after the Cyber Operations Wing of the Kerala Police issued a notice to Facebook, citing provisions of the IT Act.

The police stated that the notice was issued on their own accord after observing abusive and divisive remarks in the comment section.

The Cyber Wing emphasized that it only aimed to have the comments removed, concerned that escalating discussions could incite law and order issues.

However, Facebook ended up removing the entire video instead.

Importantly, there was no content in the reel that breached Facebook’s community guidelines or legal provisions.

Facebook itself acknowledged in its notification that the content did not violate its policies.

Manorama News has filed complaints with both the Chief Electoral Officer and the State Police Chief regarding the video's removal.

This incident has intensified the ongoing debate about police interference in political content online during the electoral period in Kerala.

Previously, there had been significant criticism regarding police actions against individuals reacting to the dissemination of a contentious document bearing a BJP office seal.

With the ECI now involved and the video’s restoration anticipated, this controversy highlights the fragile balance between regulation and free expression in the midst of a critical electoral contest.

Point of View

I view this incident as a crucial example of the ongoing tension between law enforcement and political expression. The involvement of the Election Commission underscores the delicate balance that must be maintained between regulating online content and safeguarding democratic discourse.
