ED Launches Raids at 12 Locations in Bengal Ration Scam
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 10 (NationPress) - Officials from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) have initiated coordinated raids across 12 different locations in West Bengal since Friday morning, focusing on the ongoing ration distribution scandal.
The targeted areas for these operations include sites in the state capital Kolkata as well as districts such as North 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, and neighboring Howrah, according to sources familiar with the situation.
In Kolkata, the ED is executing searches at a businessman’s office located in the prominent Poddar Court building in Central Kolkata, alongside another office at Minto Park in South Kolkata.
Additionally, another team from the ED is conducting a raid at the residence of the second businessman on the upscale Lord Sinha Road in South Kolkata.
All ED teams are accompanied by personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).
According to sources, “A recent arrest linked to the ration distribution corruption case led investigators to the names of these businessmen, prompting Friday's raids.”
To provide context, the alleged irregularities in ration distribution first came to light in 2020 when details emerged regarding the illicit sale of 762 kilograms of flour intended for the Public Distribution System (PDS).
Further investigations revealed that a significant portion of wheat designated for the PDS was rerouted to the open market and sold at inflated prices.
Following the initiation of the investigation by the ED, several individuals, including former state food and supplies minister and former state forest minister, Jyotipriya Mallick, were apprehended.
After spending over a year in jail, Mallick is now out on bail and is actively participating in elections as a candidate for the Trinamool Congress.
Recently, the ED has ramped up its activities in West Bengal, especially with the upcoming Assembly elections.
Throughout the week, the ED has also executed raids related to an illegal land-grabbing money laundering case in various locations in Kolkata.
