Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 28 (NationPress) — In a significant development, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated coordinated raids across multiple sites in West Bengal since Saturday morning, focusing on a land scam investigation. The operations encompass the state capital of Kolkata and its surrounding areas.
Sources familiar with the situation revealed that among the targeted locations are both the office and residence of a prominent businessman linked to the ruling Trinamool Congress. However, the ED has chosen not to disclose the identity of this individual.
The raids commenced early Saturday at the businessman’s residence, situated in an upscale residential complex on Ballygunge Circular Road in South Kolkata.
Allegations against the businessman and his company include illegal land acquisition and deceiving investors by enticing them to invest in particular projects with promises of high returns.
The ED launched its investigation following numerous FIRs filed against the company and its owner at various police stations throughout the state.
Currently, ED officials are scrutinizing various financial documents related to the company, including bank account details and land deeds. During the raids, they are also interrogating several senior officials and directors of the corporate entity.
These coordinated raids are occurring amidst the crucial two-phase Assembly elections in West Bengal, scheduled for April 24 and April 29, where the Model Code of Conduct is already in effect.
It is worth noting that on January 8 of this year, the ED faced opposition while trying to conduct similar operations at the office of the Indian Action Political Committee (I-PAC) and the residence of its co-founder, Pratik Jain. During that time, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited both locations, accompanied by high-ranking bureaucrats and police officers, leaving with several documents.
The case surrounding these events is presently under consideration by the Supreme Court, with I-PAC serving as the voter strategy agency for the Trinamool Congress.
