ED Launches Raids in Kolkata Over Land-Grabbing Allegations
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 17 (NationPress) The Enforcement Directorate (ED), supported by personnel from the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), executed simultaneous raids at approximately five locations in and around Kolkata on Friday, as part of an investigation into a multi-crore illegal land-grabbing scandal.
These actions coincided with similar search operations by Income Tax Department officials at the residences and campaign office of Debasish Kumar, a senior legislator from the Trinamool Congress and a member of the Mayor-in-Council for the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Kumar has been re-nominated as a candidate by his party from the Rashbehari Assembly Constituency in South Kolkata.
Insiders revealed that the ED's investigations primarily targeted the offices of a real estate firm believed to be involved in the illegal land acquisition. Additionally, searches were conducted at the home of a chartered accountant linked to the case.
Earlier this month, the ED had previously raided multiple offices of the same real estate firm, during which Kumar's name emerged as a key figure in the case.
According to sources, the ED is focused on uncovering connections between influential political figures in West Bengal and the ongoing money laundering investigation tied to the real estate company and its land-grabbing activities.
Initial evidence suggests that the execution of this land acquisition scheme could not have occurred without the backing of politically powerful individuals.
The main allegations against the real estate company's promoters include the fabrication and forgery of documents to illegally acquire various parcels of land, including public properties, which were later exploited for commercial gain through extensive real estate projects.
On April 1, the Enforcement Directorate seized over Rs one crore in cash from a company executive's residence in the Behala locality. Additionally, unlicensed firearms were found at a businessman's home in the Kasba area of Kolkata.
More updates and official confirmations are expected soon.
