Income Tax Raids Target Trinamool Congress Leader in Land Grabbing Investigation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 17 (NationPress) A contingent from the Income Tax (I-T) Department, accompanied by personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), has initiated a raid and search operation at the home of local Trinamool Congress leader Kumar Saha in Kalighat, Kolkata. This area is in close proximity to the official residence of Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal.
The I-T department's actions are part of an investigation into a money laundering case linked to illegal land grabbing, which has also prompted another team of I-T officials to search the residence and election office of veteran Trinamool Congress lawmaker and Member Mayor-in-Council, Debasish Kumar.
In conjunction with this, officials from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are conducting raids at a real estate company’s offices and the residence of a chartered accountant in various locations around Kolkata.
Supporters of the Trinamool Congress have gathered to protest outside the homes of both Kumar and Saha, claiming that these actions from the ED and I-T Department are politically motivated. They accuse the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Union government of targeting Trinamool Congress leaders in a vendetta just ahead of the crucial two-phase Assembly elections scheduled later this month.
Although Saha does not hold an elected position, he is recognized as a key organizer within the Trinamool Congress, primarily responsible for mobilizing crowds at various public events in Kolkata.
Meanwhile, Kumar has been re-nominated as the Trinamool Congress candidate representing his home constituency, Rashbehari Assembly in Kolkata.
The central accusation in this money laundering case involves the fabrication and forgery of documents to unlawfully acquire multiple parcels of land, including public land, and subsequently exploiting these lands for commercial real estate projects.
On April 1, the ED seized over Rs 1 crore in cash from an executive's residence in the Behala area of the city. Additionally, unlicensed weapons were discovered at the home of a businessman in the Kasba area of Kolkata.
