Seattle, June 24 (NationPress) The head coach of Paris Saint Germain (PSG), Luis Enrique, has voiced his dissatisfaction with the condition of the pitches at the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup taking place in the United States. He remarked that the ball is ‘bouncing like a rabbit’.
PSG secured a 2-0 victory over the local team Seattle Sounders FC, earning a spot in the Round of 16 at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025. Despite the win, the Spaniard expressed concerns regarding the pitch quality at Lumen Field.
"I can’t picture an NBA court riddled with holes. My primary concern is the playing field's condition, and I mention this after our victory. The ball bounces almost as if it’s jumping around like a rabbit," Enrique stated, as reported by BBC Sport.
Goals from Kvicha Kvaratskhelia and Achraf Hakimi in each half ensured maximum points for the European champions, who topped Group B ahead of second-placed Botafogo.
"I’m delighted, naturally. Competing in this kind of match is challenging. The pitch conditions are different from what we encounter in Europe. We need to manage that and the pace effectively, but I believe we outperformed them and deserved the win. This competition requires readiness to face challenges in cities like Atlanta, Philadelphia, or beyond. Our aim is to progress as far as possible, and I have faith that the players are prepared. The real competition begins now, and it will be incredibly intense. After each match, we’ll need to assess our qualification status. We’re motivated," Enrique added.
The United States will also host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico, necessitating improvements in pitch quality before this major international event.
Real Madrid and England midfielder Jude Bellingham, who was awarded Player of the Match in the 3-1 victory over Pachuca, also criticized the pitch conditions and expressed hope for improvements before the World Cup.
"The pitches aren’t great, honestly, mate. I wouldn’t say it’s a nightmare for any one team; it’s the same for everyone. I mention this only because you asked, but the pitches leave much to be desired," he said.
"It affects ball control and body balance, and it can be tough on the knees as well. I hope they address this as we approach next year's World Cup. It’s vital to protect the players and provide an entertaining spectacle for fans," Bellingham told Sky Sports.
