Mumbai, June 26 (NationPress) Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has criticized BJP legislator and former Minister Babanrao Lonikar for his remarks about farmers, specifically his statement regarding providing them with clothing, which has since gained significant traction on social media.
Fadnavis' response followed a wave of condemnation from the opposition, demanding an apology from Lonikar and suggesting that the BJP should take disciplinary action against him.
The Chief Minister conveyed his strong disapproval of Lonikar’s comments, asserting, “Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi identifies as the Pradhan Sevak of the nation. We are here to serve the populace. Hence, no individual can claim ownership over the people.”
Fadnavis stated, “Babanrao Lonikar’s statement is entirely inappropriate. Even if directed at specific individuals, such remarks are unacceptable. The Prime Minister emphasizes that he is a servant of the people, and therefore, none of us can consider ourselves their owners. The comments made by Lonikar, which have been highlighted in news reports, are fundamentally wrong.”
He confirmed that Lonikar would face consequences for his remarks.
Previously on Thursday, Lonikar ignited controversy by claiming, “We provided you with clothing, and we also assisted your father financially for agricultural purposes.”
He went further, stating, “We offer support to your mother, sister, and wife through the Ladki Bhahin Yojana. The clothes you wear, the shoes on your feet, and the slippers are all courtesy of our government.”
The Leader of Opposition and Shiv Sena (UBT) member Ambadas Danve shared Lonikar's controversial statement online, where it appeared he was disparaging farmers.
Lonikar, originating from the Marathwada region, further remarked, “Those five or six carts on crushed stone... Babanrao Lonikar compensated his mother’s salary. Prime Minister Modi provided your father with Rs 6,000 for sowing. The funds from the Ladki Bhahin Yojana were allocated in the names of your mother, sister, and wife. The garments you wear are sourced from our government. The footwear on your feet is due to us. The basket you hold is also because of us. Are you taking our money while criticizing us?”
Danve, also from Marathwada, condemned Lonikar, stating, “This is reminiscent of colonial attitudes! Such language is inappropriate in a democracy, Babanrao, for your clothing and shoes are provided by the people. Your position as an MLA exists because of the people... the fuel in your vehicle is funded by the populace... your travel expenses are also covered by the people... your political standing is due to the people... your seat in the Assembly is because of the citizens. With elections approaching, we will remember your words.”
State Congress leader Harshwardhan Sapkal vehemently criticized Lonikar, calling his statement “disgraceful.” He emphasized, “All of Maharashtra is aware of Lonikar’s past misdeeds. Any attempts to belittle the citizens and farmers will not be tolerated. Lonikar must apologize, or the BJP should expel him from the party. Otherwise, we will ensure he cannot enter any village.”
NCP(SP) leader Rohini Khadse also rebuked Lonikar, advising him to temper his arrogance, as the electorate will ultimately hold him accountable.
