Bhubaneswar, Feb 26: The heartbreaking demise of a farmer in the Rajnagar region of Kendrapara district, allegedly due to the distress faced during the paddy procurement process, has sparked a fierce political debate in the state.

The farmer, named Trilochan Nayak, hailed from Junagadi village within the Rajnagar block. Reports indicate that Nayak received a notification to sell his paddy at the local Mandi on January 16. However, his attempts to have his paddy procured at the Mandi over the course of more than a month were in vain, despite having officially registered at the Mandi on February 14. Nayak’s family contended that there was an unlawful deduction of 6 kg per quintal during the registration procedure.

After waiting several additional days, the society secretary instructed Nayak just a few days ago to transport his paddy to a mill instead. It was claimed that the mill only accepted the crop after applying a deduction of 3 kg per quintal, culminating in a total deduction of 9 kg per quintal. Furthermore, it was alleged that the mill owner demanded an extra Rs 3,000 from Nayak, who had already incurred approximately Rs 15,000 in transportation and related expenses, totaling around Rs 18,000.

Nayak's relatives reported that he spent three days safeguarding his paddy at the Rice Mill without adequate food or rest. After his return from the mill on Wednesday, he began to experience chest pains and reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack.

This incident has intensified political tensions, with the opposition party BJD ramping up its criticism of the state government over the ongoing turmoil at the Mandis throughout the state. The BJD accused the state government of a complete failure in the paddy procurement system.

The party has called for the resignation of the State Supply Minister, Krushna Chandra Patra, on moral grounds, asserting that he is responsible for the farmer’s death due to his repeated sharing of misleading information regarding the paddy procurement situation.

In response, Minister Patra informed the press that a team would be dispatched to the village in Rajnagar to probe the claims. He assured that if the allegations are validated, strict action would be taken against those accountable for this tragic event.
