Kolkata, Aug 13 (NationPress) A 30-year-old individual was taken into custody for carrying a firearm close to the Sealdah railway station on Wednesday, as reported by authorities. A home guard and a traffic sergeant noticed the man behaving suspiciously and intervened.
However, they had to pursue the individual—identified as Pankaj Biswas—for quite a distance before successfully apprehending him. Upon inspection, a firearm was discovered concealed inside his shirt.
Subsequently, officers from the Entally Police Station arrived at the scene and arrested the young man. Concerns regarding safety in and around Sealdah station have been raised following the apprehension of a person armed with a firearm.
Sealdah Station, one of the busiest railway stations in West Bengal after Howrah, sees thousands of commuters daily.
According to police sources, Pankaj Biswas is from the Pottery Road area in north Kolkata.
He was observed acting suspiciously near Beliaghata Road, adjacent to Sealdah station, during the morning hours. Home Guard Sujit Khanra and Traffic Sergeant Hiranmoy Sarkar were on duty at that time.
They approached him for questioning due to their suspicions. After being apprehended by the home guard and traffic sergeant, the young man attempted to flee.
They chased him over a considerable distance before catching up to him.
During the search, a country-made firearm was discovered hidden within his shirt. Following this, he was handed over to the Entally police station.
After an interrogation, the individual was arrested. Police sources indicated that the firearm recovered from him was in a non-operational state.
“It has been confiscated. We are investigating the origin of the weapon. A case has been filed against the arrested individual under the relevant sections of the Arms Act,” stated a police officer.
The police are also probing the reasons for the youth's presence with a firearm near Sealdah station and whether there was any intention to use it.
