Tragic Fire Claims Lives of Two Firefighters in South Korea's Cold Storage Facility
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, April 12 (NationPress) A devastating fire erupted at a cold storage facility in a southwestern county on Sunday, resulting in the tragic deaths of two firefighters as the situation escalated during rescue efforts, according to South Korean officials.
The blaze commenced around 8:25 am at a warehouse belonging to a fisheries processing company in Wando, located in South Jeolla Province. Over 100 firefighters were deployed to combat the flames, which were finally extinguished after approximately three hours, as reported by the Wando Fire Station and Yonhap News Agency.
Sadly, two firefighters became trapped inside the facility and were later discovered deceased.
Fire officials believe the fire ignited when workers were utilizing a torch to remove paint from the structure in preparation for floor-leveling and resurfacing.
One official from the fishery experienced smoke inhalation and was transported to a nearby hospital; fortunately, their condition was not life-threatening.
Lee Min-seok, the chief of the Wando Fire Station, stated that the two firefighters were unable to escape after re-entering the building to extinguish residual flames following the initial firefighting efforts.
"An oil mist thought to be suspended near the ceiling exploded," Lee disclosed during a press conference. "The operations chief had ordered seven firefighters to evacuate upon observing black smoke and flames via radio communication, but two were tragically unable to exit."
Fire authorities have announced plans to thoroughly investigate the precise cause of the fire.
Investigators suspect that the use of epoxy flooring, known for its high flammability, may have exacerbated the rapid spread of the fire. The presence of sandwich panels in various sections of the warehouse likely hindered firefighting efforts.
In response to the incident, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung was briefed and instructed fire authorities to deploy all possible resources for firefighting and rescue operations, as conveyed by presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung in a written statement.
In a post shared on social media platform X, President Lee expressed condolences to the families of the fallen firefighters, aged 44 and 30. He remarked, "They rushed to the most perilous scene to safeguard the lives and security of the public, and they fulfilled their duties until the very end. I bow my head in respect for their bravery and commitment."
Lee emphasized that the government regards this incident with utmost seriousness and will strive to create a safer working environment for firefighters.
