Are OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity Offering Free AI Tools in India?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 19 (NationPress) OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity have rolled out complimentary access to their premium artificial intelligence resources in India, intensifying rivalry in one of the globe's most rapidly evolving digital markets.
This initiative seeks to swiftly enhance their user community in a nation characterized by inexpensive data tariffs and a vast smartphone user base, which is fueling a significant appetite for AI-driven services.
India has emerged as a critical arena for AI companies due to its extensive smartphone user population of approximately 730 million and some of the most affordable mobile data prices worldwide.
Users in India consume an average of 21 gigabytes of data monthly, at an astonishingly low rate of just 9.2 cents per gigabyte, making the utilization of AI tools considerably more economical than in many other nations.
Following suit, OpenAI has introduced its ChatGPT Go plan at no charge for a year in India. This plan offers greater usage limits compared to standard versions of ChatGPT, which is typically a paid service in over 100 countries and was previously valued at $54 in India. The nationwide free offer, launched in November, is exclusive to Indian users.
These strategies have resulted in a remarkable increase in engagement. According to data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, the daily active users of ChatGPT in India have soared by 607% year-on-year, reaching 73 million as of last week.
This number surpasses the daily user count in the United States, positioning India as the leading market for daily users of both chatbots.
Meanwhile, Perplexity has intensified its efforts in India by providing its Pro plan, usually priced at $200 annually, at no cost for one year to Airtel customers.
The company stated that this plan grants users unlimited access to its most sophisticated research capabilities. Following this initiative, India now represents over one-third of Perplexity's global daily active users, a significant rise from just 7% last year.
User engagement metrics indicate that ChatGPT currently holds the lead in India. In November, approximately 46% of its monthly users accessed the app daily, compared to 20% for Perplexity and 14% for Gemini.
