New Delhi, Feb 19 (NationPress) OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman remarked on Thursday that India is undergoing remarkable advancements in the adoption of Artificial Intelligence, labeling the nation as one of the company's fastest-expanding markets worldwide.
While addressing the media during the 'India AI Impact Summit 2026' in the capital, Altman stated, "India's AI potential is extraordinary. It's fantastic to be here."
He further emphasized, “This market is among our fastest-growing globally. Perhaps it is the fastest right now, especially for Codex,” he shared with journalists.
Altman pointed out that India boasts over 100 million weekly users of ChatGPT, spanning students, educators, developers, and entrepreneurs.
“More than 100 million individuals engage with ChatGPT every week,” he noted.
He acknowledged that the pace and magnitude of adoption in India underscore its rising significance in the worldwide AI landscape.
Earlier that day, Altman unveiled the ‘OpenAI for India’ initiative during the summit.
This initiative is designed to enhance infrastructure, elevate skills, and forge local collaborations to create AI solutions customized for India.
He expressed the ambition to develop “AI with India, for India, and in India.”
Under this initiative, OpenAI will partner with leading Indian firms, starting with the Tata Group, to broaden access to AI and unlock its economic and social advantages.
The collaboration will prioritize establishing sovereign AI capabilities, expediting enterprise adoption, investing in workforce skill enhancement, and bolstering India’s burgeoning AI ecosystem.
As part of OpenAI’s global Stargate initiative, the organization will collaborate with Tata Group to create AI-ready data center infrastructure in India.
OpenAI will be the inaugural customer of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) HyperVault data center business, initiating with 100 megawatts of capacity and potentially scaling to 1 gigawatt in the future.
Altman noted that India's robust tech talent pool, enthusiasm for AI, and governmental backing position the country well to influence the future of democratic AI adoption at scale.
The planned infrastructure will enable OpenAI's advanced models to function securely within India, ensuring reduced latency and compliance with data residency and security mandates.
