Can India Become a Leading Force in AI? Sam Altman Thinks So!
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 15 (NationPress) In a significant recognition of India's evolving influence in the realm of artificial intelligence, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has labeled India as a potential “full-stack AI leader” and expressed intentions to enhance the company's presence and collaborations within the nation.
His comments come just before the Global AI Impact Summit 2026, which is set to commence on February 16 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
In a recent media article, Altman disclosed that India has emerged as OpenAI's second-largest user base worldwide, following the United States.
He highlighted that the country boasts 100 million weekly active users of ChatGPT, making it home to the largest number of student users globally.
India holds the fourth position globally in the adoption of Prism, OpenAI’s free tool for scientific research and LaTeX-based collaboration.
Altman emphasized OpenAI's commitment to developing AI “in India, with India, and for India.” He mentioned that the firm has made its tools freely accessible to promote equality in access, regardless of one's financial status, educational background, or technological familiarity.
Last year, OpenAI inaugurated its inaugural office in Delhi, with plans for further expansion this year.
Additionally, he noted that over 200 nonprofit leaders across four Indian cities were recently trained to leverage ChatGPT to boost their impact and efficiency.
Altman announced his intention to visit India next week and hinted at new collaborations with the government to broaden access to AI and its advantages.
He outlined a three-part strategy to ensure AI reaches grassroots levels. According to him, AI progress hinges on “Access,” which ensures tools are available to everyone; “Adoption,” involving the integration of AI into schools, clinics, and small businesses; and “Agency,” which empowers individuals with the confidence and skills to utilize AI effectively for decision-making and innovation.
