Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 19 (NationPress) Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, announced on Thursday the launch of the ‘OpenAI for India’ initiative, focusing on developing the necessary infrastructure, skills, and local partnerships to create 'AI with India, for India, and in India'.
During the ‘India AI Impact Summit 2026’, held in New Delhi, the US-based creator of ChatGPT unveiled this nationwide project in collaboration with prominent Indian partners aimed at broadening access to AI and harnessing its economic and societal advantages in the world's largest democracy.
India now boasts over 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, encompassing students, educators, developers, and entrepreneurs.
The initiative builds upon this existing momentum, collaborating with top partners—starting with Tata Group—to develop sovereign AI capabilities, boost enterprise adoption, invest in workforce training, and enhance India's flourishing AI ecosystem.
As part of their global Stargate initiative, OpenAI and Tata Group are joining forces to establish local, AI-ready data center capabilities focused on data residency, security, and long-term domestic capacity.
OpenAI will be the inaugural customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ HyperVault data center division, initiating with 100 megawatts of capacity and the potential to expand to 1 gigawatt over time.
“India is already at the forefront of AI adoption, and with its indigenous tech talent, enthusiasm for AI's potential, and robust government backing, it is ideally positioned to influence the future and the widespread adoption of democratic AI,” Altman remarked.
The infrastructure will facilitate the secure operation of OpenAI’s most sophisticated models in India, ensuring lower latency while adhering to data residency, security, and compliance standards for critical and governmental workloads.
“This strategic alliance between OpenAI and Tata Group signifies a significant step in India’s ambition to emerge as a global AI leader. We are excited to collaborate with OpenAI to establish cutting-edge AI infrastructure in India,” stated N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons.
This partnership offers a unique chance for OpenAI and TCS to revolutionize industries, and together, “we will equip India’s youth with the skills necessary to excel in the AI era,” he added.
Tata Group plans to implement ChatGPT Enterprise among its workforce over the coming years, starting with hundreds of thousands of TCS employees, positioning it as one of the most extensive enterprise AI rollouts globally.
TCS also aims to leverage OpenAI’s Codex to standardize AI-native software development across its teams.
