Sitharaman and Goyal Announce Fuel Duty Cuts Amid Global Oil Crisis
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 27 (NationPress) In response to the ongoing crisis in West Asia, the government announced a reduction in the central excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 10 per litre for each. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated this initiative aims to protect consumers from the fluctuations in global oil prices.
She emphasized that this reduction is crucial for shielding citizens from potential fuel price hikes.
"Given the current crisis in West Asia, we have lowered the central excise duty on petrol and diesel for domestic use by Rs 10 per litre. This is intended to protect consumers from rising costs," Sitharaman posted on X.
In addition, the government has implemented export duties on diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) to maintain adequate domestic supplies amid uncertain market conditions. A significant special additional excise duty of Rs 50 per litre has also been introduced on ATF.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal echoed these sentiments, calling this move a critical measure to safeguard citizens from global economic turbulence.
He noted that the duty reduction would alleviate household financial pressures, while the export restrictions on diesel and ATF would ensure prioritization of domestic supply, thus supporting economic stability.
"Even though the crisis in West Asia is affecting global energy markets, the Centre has provided direct price relief by cutting the excise duty on petrol and diesel," Goyal added.
He further remarked, "By strategically prioritizing domestic supply through export duties on diesel and ATF, the government is ensuring that India's economic growth remains uninterrupted."
The ministers reiterated the government's commitment to shielding the domestic economy from external disturbances, particularly as geopolitical tensions continue to affect global energy markets.
Moreover, Brent crude prices remained around the $100 mark, having decreased by over 5 percent this week due to the escalating conflict in West Asia, particularly involving Iran, and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy trade route.
