New Delhi, Nov 10 (NationPress) The head coach of India, Gautam Gambhir, has disclosed that one of the most demanding parts of his role is engaging in discussions with talented players who unfortunately do not make it to the playing XI. The 44-year-old has recently experienced intense scrutiny from fans and analysts criticizing his choice to bench a player in form to bring others into the squad.
In a video interview released by the BCCI on Monday, Gambhir was queried about how he navigates conversations with reliable wicket-takers like Arshdeep and Kuldeep when they are left out of the XI. The former cricketer expressed, “This is the hardest aspect for me as a coach, and it is indeed the toughest task I have. At times, I am aware that there is immense talent sitting on the bench, and every player has the right to be in the playing XI. However, ultimately, you can only select 11 players, considering the optimal combination needed for that specific match day.
“Nonetheless, the essence of these discussions is crucial, and the communication must be transparent and sincere. Clearly, these are tough talks to have. Informing a player that they are not part of the lineup is probably the hardest dialogue for both the coach and the athlete since I understand that the player may feel disappointed when they deserve to play,” he added.
Gambhir also highlighted that the atmosphere within the dressing room has been notably positive, with a strong emphasis on transparency and honesty. He expressed hope that interactions between players and coaches remain confidential and urged everyone to refrain from jumping to conclusions regarding management's decisions.
“If you are truthful, straightforward, and you convey your message from the heart without ulterior motives, many players grasp that. The communication between a player and the coach should remain private, rather than being subjected to public speculation and various theories. This group, along with the support staff, has excelled in maintaining a transparent and honest dressing room, which is the environment we aspire to foster,” he concluded.
