A pregnant woman police constable, D. Shilpa (PC-147), aged 28, was allegedly assaulted with an iron rod multiple times at the Majestic Railway Police Station in Bengaluru in the early hours of 26 August, in a disturbing attack that came to light on Thursday. Shilpa, who was on night duty at the time, sustained severe head injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Suguna Hospital, Rajajinagar. The accused, identified as Gajendra, has since been arrested by the Railway Police.

How the Attack Unfolded

According to police, Gajendra arrived at the railway police station at approximately 4 a.m. on 26 August to file a complaint about a missing mobile phone. As no other staff were present at the station at the time, Shilpa — the sole officer on duty — informed him that the concerned personnel were unavailable and asked him to return in the morning.

Gajendra initially left but returned shortly afterwards. Police say he then picked up an iron rod placed near a barricade inside the station and began attacking Shilpa, who was seated at her post. According to police sources, she was struck on the head approximately seven to eight times.

Victim's Condition and Medical Treatment

Colleagues who heard the commotion rushed Shilpa to a nearby hospital immediately. She was first treated at Manipal Hospital before being transferred to Suguna Hospital in Rajajinagar, where she remains under care for severe head injuries. Her pregnancy has added to the gravity of the incident, raising serious concerns about the safety of personnel deployed on night duty at police stations.

Shilpa has reportedly stated that during the attack, the accused appeared intent on killing her and sending a message to police personnel. Gajendra allegedly shouted in Hindi: 'Why won't you take my complaint? I will kill you if you won't carry out your duties.' The remarks suggest the assault was driven by frustration over the delayed complaint registration, though police are continuing to investigate the full circumstances.

Legal Action and Investigation

The Bengaluru City Railway Police have registered a case against Gajendra under Sections 109 and 132 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Authorities are probing the motive behind the attack and the sequence of events that led the accused to return to the station and carry out the assault. This incident has drawn attention to the vulnerability of lone-duty officers — particularly women — during late-night shifts at understaffed police posts.
