New Delhi, May 6 (NationPress) Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir vehemently criticized commentators who expressed dissatisfaction with his appointment, labeling them as individuals who view Indian cricket as their personal property.
This marks Gambhir's first public address since he took over from Rahul Dravid in July of last year. His appointment followed a successful campaign with the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024, where he guided the team to their third title after a decade-long absence from the winners' circle.
During Gambhir's leadership, India faced a historic 3-0 whitewash in the home Test series against New Zealand, followed by a 3-1 series loss against Australia, resulting in the Rohit Sharma-led squad failing to secure the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in a decade. Additionally, India missed out on a spot in the World Test Championship final for the first time since its inception.
Nonetheless, India triumphed in the eight-team Champions Trophy in Dubai, defeating New Zealand in the final and securing their third title in this tournament.
“When I accepted this position, I was aware of the inevitable ups and downs. It was anticipated, and I recognized that I would be evaluated daily based on the performance of the Indian team. Criticism and praise are part of the journey. My goal is to make our country proud alongside all the players, and that commitment will remain until the end of my coaching career.
“It has been eight months since I assumed this role, and if the results are unfavorable, I welcome criticism. However, some commentators, who have been in the booth for 25 years, believe Indian cricket is theirs to control. It is not; it belongs to the people of our nation,” Gambhir stated at the ABP India At 2047 Summit on Tuesday.
The head coach further condemned his detractors for their dishonest criticisms directed at him since taking charge of the Indian team.
“They’ve questioned my coaching abilities, my records, and even my Champions Trophy prize money. I do not need to disclose how I spend my money, but the nation deserves to know that these individuals have become NRIs who profit from India without paying taxes here. I am a proud Indian and will remain one until my last breath,” Gambhir asserted.
“Those whose own homes are made of cardboard should think not just a thousand times but a million times before casting stones at others’ homes,” he added.
