New Delhi, March 9 (NationPress) India's victory in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup marks a significant milestone for the team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, and represents a crucial moment of redemption for head coach Gautam Gambhir, according to Jatin Paranjape, a former Indian cricketer and national selector.

Gambhir, who took over from Rahul Dravid as head coach after India's T20 World Cup win in 2024, faced intense scrutiny leading up to the tournament due to a challenging period in other formats—India suffered a 2-0 Test series defeat against South Africa and a 2-1 loss in an ODI series against New Zealand.

Nevertheless, under Gambhir's leadership, India secured the 2025 ODI Champions Trophy and the T20 Asia Cup, and this latest win adds a second consecutive ICC title to his record. With two ICC white-ball trophies in consecutive years, Gambhir has now established himself as the most successful head coach in the history of Indian men's cricket.

“This victory is highly significant for Gautam Gambhir. It feels like a moment of redemption as he leads this squad. Gautam has consistently advocated for clarity, strong intent, and supporting players capable of changing the game's outcome,” Paranjape remarked to IANS the day after India became the first team to secure three T20 World Cup titles, triumphing on home soil and achieving back-to-back victories.

While his tactical skills are often debated, the results in the T20 format speak volumes. Gambhir, a two-time World Cup-winning opener, has shown a keen understanding of T20 cricket—a skill he has seamlessly transitioned into his coaching role, evident in Sunday’s performance.

Paranjape, co-founder of KheloMore and a member of the BCCI Cricket Advisory Committee, also emphasized the emergence of Suryakumar Yadav as captain. Yadav joins the ranks of notable Indian men’s captains who have won a World Cup, including Kapil Dev, MS Dhoni, and Rohit Sharma.

“Suryakumar Yadav's journey as captain is fascinating, as he wasn’t the obvious choice initially. However, his development as a player over the past few years has been remarkable, and that confidence has translated into his leadership,” he added.

Paranjape noted that Yadav’s ability to inspire and elevate his teammates is a remarkable quality. He cited Sanju Samson as an example: “What distinguishes Surya is that he is a player’s captain. He fosters an open environment and treats the players as equals, empowering them to express themselves freely.

“This is evident in the case of Sanju Samson. The talent was always present, but Surya has granted him the freedom and confidence to play his natural game. When a captain extends that level of trust, players are more likely to perform well for the team,” he concluded.
