New Delhi, April 5 (NationPress) Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, on Saturday honored Babu Jagjivan Ram on his birth anniversary, which is celebrated as Samta Diwas nationwide.
This day recognizes the life and contributions of the veteran freedom fighter, socialist icon, and advocate for social justice.
To commemorate the occasion, LoP Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by numerous senior Congress leaders, visited the Babu Jagjivan Ram memorial to pay respects to the former Deputy Prime Minister.
On X, LoP Gandhi stated, "Respectful tributes to Babu Jagjivan Ram ji on his birth anniversary. Babu ji committed his entire life to advocating for the rights of the marginalized, the oppressed, and Dalits. He fortified the democratic and constitutional values of our nation by enhancing their rights and participation."

Congress National President, Mallikarjun Kharge, also shared his admiration on this day, stating on X, "On Samta Diwas, heartfelt tribute to the remarkable freedom fighter, trailblazer of social justice, and former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram ji on his birth anniversary."
Kharge further remarked, "The great champion of equality, Babu ji, fought selflessly for justice and the upliftment of the vulnerable, oppressed, and backward communities, making a significant contribution towards enhancing parliamentary democracy."
Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, who is also the daughter of Babu Jagjivan Ram, paid her respects and spoke to IANS about the significance of Samta Diwas.
"Samta signifies equality for all. There exists considerable inequality and discrimination in our nation. Thus, when we observe Samta Diwas, we communicate a message not only to our country but to the entire world — that the sentiment of discrimination must be eradicated," she stated.
Bihar Congress President Rajesh Kumar also highlighted Babu Jagjivan Ram's lasting legacy, telling IANS, "The legacy of Babu Jagjivan Ram is reflected in his efforts to uplift individuals from marginalized communities. His involvement in the Samta Andolan (Equality Movement) has been truly groundbreaking."
