Bengaluru, May 12 (NationPress) Political factions in Karnataka are devising strategies to seize the Gangavati Assembly seat, which became vacant following the disqualification of mining magnate and Karnataka MLA G. Janardhana Reddy.
Reddy faced disqualification from the Karnataka Assembly on May 8 after a Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court found him guilty in an illegal mining case.
The current Congress-led government in Karnataka, under the leadership of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, took office on May 20, 2023. The Karnataka Assembly's term is set to conclude in May 2028.
Despite winning the Gangavati seat in the 2023 Assembly elections as a candidate for his own party, Kalyana Rajya Pragathi Paksha (KRPP), Reddy disbanded the party and rejoined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on March 25, 2024.
With the seat now officially empty, the ruling Congress, spearheaded by CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister and State Congress President D.K. Shivakumar, is keen to reclaim the seat to showcase that their policies have effectively resonated with the populace, despite the Opposition's claims of appeasement politics.
Conversely, the BJP is resolute in its efforts to retain the seat.
For State BJP President B.Y. Vijayendra, securing a victory here is crucial for solidifying his political influence.
He has already initiated a 'Janakrosh Yatra' across the state to rally public sentiment against the Congress-led government.
According to party insiders, following Operation Sindoor, it has become even more essential for BJP leader Vijayendra to achieve a win in Gangavati.
Meanwhile, candidates from both parties are actively seeking the ticket.
Iqbal Ansari, the Congress candidate who lost the 2023 Assembly election to Janardhana Reddy by 7,997 votes, is optimistic about securing the ticket again, leveraging the advantage of Congress being in power.
Former MP Sanganna Karadi and Congress leader Hanumantha Arasinakere are also reportedly in contention for the nomination.
On the BJP side, party sources indicate that Aruna Laxmi, Reddy's spouse, is willing to contest the seat.
Local BJP leader Paranna Munalli, who finished third in the 2023 Assembly election with 29,167 votes, is also viewed as a viable candidate.
