New Delhi, July 20 (NationPress) As the Monsoon Session of Parliament is set to commence tomorrow, Gaurav Gogoi, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha and the President of Congress Assam, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to tackle three urgent national issues: the direction of India’s foreign policy, the ongoing turmoil in Manipur, and the state of defence readiness against escalating tensions with China and Pakistan.
After an all-party meeting organized by the Centre on Sunday, Gogoi criticized the government for its lack of response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent remarks concerning his involvement in the India-Pakistan ceasefire.
“There has been no official statement or press release. It is the Prime Minister who must clarify these significant foreign policy and defence issues,” he stated, calling on PM Modi to clarify his position in Parliament.
The Congress leader also highlighted the ethnic violence in Manipur, indicating that despite the Prime Minister’s prior commitments to restore peace, the northeastern state remains in chaos after two and a half years.
“While he is visiting smaller countries (referring to PM Modi’s recent visits to Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia), he seems reluctant to visit Manipur. Why is the Prime Minister avoiding a small Indian state when it is in distress?” asked Gogoi.
Regarding national security, Gogoi pointed out the military's warnings about a potential two-front conflict with China and Pakistan. He accused the government of neglecting Parliament’s role in discussing critical issues such as defence funding and foreign policy.
“We raised these matters in the last session, but they went unanswered. We anticipate the Prime Minister will address them this time,” he remarked.
Gogoi also expressed worry over the Election Commission’s inaction in Bihar concerning the controversial special intensive revision (SIR) and suggested uncertainty about its nationwide execution.
With the Monsoon Session expected to be turbulent, the opposition is preparing to demand accountability from the government on these vital national matters.
