Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 13 (NationPress) In a significant advancement for the Make in India initiative, the US aircraft engine manufacturer GE Aerospace has forged a new partnership with the Indian Air Force to establish a domestic depot for the F404-IN20 engines, which power the HAL Tejas fighter jets.
This facility will be set up in India and will be operated by the Indian Air Force, benefiting from technical assistance provided by GE Aerospace.
The initiative seeks to enhance India’s self-reliance in defense maintenance and minimize dependence on foreign repair facilities.
Once the facility is operational, it is anticipated to significantly reduce the turnaround time required for engine repairs and maintenance.
As per the agreement, the IAF will own, operate, and maintain the depot while GE Aerospace will supply technical support, training, staffing, and ensure the availability of essential spare parts and specialized equipment necessary for efficient operations.
Rita Flaherty, Vice President of Sales and Business Development for Defence and Systems at GE Aerospace, stated that this collaboration underscores the company's ongoing commitment to assist India’s armed forces.
She further noted that the new facility is expected to enhance the availability of F404-IN20 engines for the Tejas fleet, ensuring that the IAF has timely access to cutting-edge technology for its defense requirements.
GE Aerospace also emphasized its extensive presence within India’s defense sector. Its engines are integral to various critical platforms, including the Indian Navy’s P-8I maritime patrol aircraft and MH-60R helicopters, along with the Indian Air Force’s AH-64 Apache helicopters.
Moreover, LM2500 marine gas turbines from GE are utilized in the INS Vikrant aircraft carrier and the P-17 Shivalik-class frigates.
With over four decades of engagement in India’s aviation industry, GE’s manufacturing facility in Pune, along with its 13 local partners, is integrated into its global supply chain, further solidifying its presence in the region.
