Ashok Gehlot Critiques BJP for Delays in Sumer Library Opening in Jodhpur
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, April 6 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, has publicly condemned the BJP-led state administration for the protracted delay in making the historic Sumer Library in Jodhpur operational. He claims this reflects a disregard for educational advancement and public enlightenment.
In a recent statement made as part of his initiative, “Intezaar Shastra: Chapter 15,” Gehlot emphasized that the prior Congress administration had set forth plans to modernize the Sumer Library into an advanced e-library, equipped with state-of-the-art digital tools and contemporary infrastructure.
“The construction is complete, yet the BJP government has not made it operational. This clearly shows a lack of commitment,” remarked Gehlot.
He highlighted that the new library, built at a cost of Rs 7.96 crore, is entirely ready for use; however, it remains closed due to the withholding of funds necessary for furniture and finishing touches.
“By delaying the relatively modest budget needed for the final setup, the government has effectively hindered a project that could have greatly benefited students and the youth,” he added.
Gehlot further accused the government of exhibiting a general indifference towards education. “Why does the BJP government seem resistant to fostering education and knowledge?” he questioned.
Founded in 1935, the Sumer Library initially operated from the old Sumer Bhawan building at Umed Udhyan in Jodhpur. In the fiscal year 2022-23, a budget exceeding Rs 7 crore was allocated for the construction of a new facility.
Despite the completion of the infrastructure, digitalization, and e-library features, the library has yet to open its doors to the public due to pending interior work.
Gehlot asserted that such delays deprive the community, especially students and young readers, of crucial educational resources and urged the government to promptly complete the remaining tasks and make the facility accessible as soon as possible.
“It appears the BJP government does not wish for the public to gain knowledge through reading and education,” he stated.
The veteran Congress leader has initiated a social media campaign titled 'Intezar Shastra' to bring attention to the shortcomings of the BJP government under Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma.
