New Delhi, Sep 24 (NationPress) The Central government has officially prolonged the term of General Anil Chauhan as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs until May 30, 2026. On September 24, 2025, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) sanctioned this extension, confirming that General Chauhan will continue serving as CDS and also act as Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Military Affairs, until further notice.
General Chauhan assumed the CDS role on September 28, 2022, following the tragic passing of his predecessor, Gen Bipin Rawat, in a helicopter crash.
Recalled from retirement, General Chauhan is notably the first three-star officer to take on this traditionally four-star role.
Originating from the Pauri Garhwal district in Uttarakhand, General Chauhan commenced his military journey at the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, as part of the 58th Course.
