New Delhi, March 16 (NationPress) The nation and Armed forces paid heartfelt tributes to General Bipin Rawat, India’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), on his 67th birth anniversary, honoring his unwavering service in fortifying the nation's defence capabilities.

March 16, 2025, commemorated the 67th birth anniversary of this courageous and visionary leader, born in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand in 1958, who became the first CDS of the Indian Armed Forces. He was appointed as the country’s first CDS on January 1, 2020.

The Integrated Defence Staff (IDS), which promotes coordination among various branches of the Indian Armed Forces, took to X to pay homage to India’s inaugural CDS.

“On this day, General Anil Chauhan & All Ranks of the Indian Armed Forces remember and pay tribute to India’s first Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat - a visionary leader, a brave soldier, and a strategic thinker who devoted his life to fortifying India’s defence capabilities,” the HQ-IDS expressed in a post on X.

General Rawat’s tenure as CDS heralded several significant reforms within the Indian military. His leadership initiated the ‘Agneepath’ scheme, the largest human resources reform in the armed forces since independence, transforming a vision into reality.

General Rawat's initiatives in enhancing civil-military relations and executing substantial transformations in military structure will remain integral to his enduring legacy.

General Anil Chauhan, the current CDS, also paid tributes to the late General Bipin Rawat, recalling him as a visionary leader, a fearless soldier, and a strategic thinker.

General Rawat’s remarkable four-decade career was distinguished by numerous significant missions, including successful counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir and leading surgical strikes against terrorist entities in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

As a Major General, he commanded an infantry division along the Line of Control in North Kashmir, where his leadership received high accolades.

His illustrious career also encompassed leading a special operation in Myanmar, targeting terrorist groups.

His leadership style, characterized by calm strategy and resolute execution, was crucial in transforming India’s military strategy.

His military journey commenced with his commissioning into the 5th Battalion of the 11 Gorkha Rifles on December 16, 1978, following his graduation from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.
