Berlin, Sep 5 (NationPress) The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has indicated that Germany's choices regarding future direct military participation in ensuring Ukraine's security will be significantly shaped by the nature and degree of United States involvement, among various other considerations.
During a virtual conference of the "Coalition of the Willing" organized by the French government on Thursday, Merz shared these insights, which were attended by European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.
He emphasized that Europe is prepared to make a substantial commitment to security guarantees for Ukraine, contingent upon reaching a negotiated resolution.
Merz noted Germany’s concentration on enhancing its role in financing, equipping, and training the Ukrainian military, while stating that any decision on direct military involvement will be made at a suitable time, once the necessary framework conditions are established.
These conditions encompass the extent of involvement from the United States and the outcomes of ongoing negotiations.
Furthermore, Merz highlighted the importance of pursuing a peace summit that includes Zelensky, aimed at achieving a ceasefire.
On the same day, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that 26 nations, primarily from Europe, have formally committed to deploying troops as part of a future ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine, albeit not directly on the frontline.
At a press conference alongside Zelensky, Macron stated that these nations would contribute to a “reassurance force” capable of deploying troops in Ukraine or offering support on land, sea, or in the air.
He also mentioned that following the summit, participants had a call with US President Donald Trump, and the United States is anticipated to finalize its contributions to the security guarantees shortly.
Zelensky welcomed this announcement as a “concrete” advancement and asserted that a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, whether bilateral or trilateral, is “essential” for progressing peace initiatives.
This announcement followed a virtual meeting of the coalition on Thursday, co-chaired by Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The coalition, comprising around 30 countries, primarily from Europe, has pledged to provide security guarantees to Ukraine.
