Kolkata, April 22 (NationPress) Following a commanding 39-run victory for Gujarat Titans (GT) against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), captain Shubman Gill highlighted the focus of his conversation with opening partner B Sai Sudharsan on strategies to score runs under challenging conditions and the goal of extending the game.
At Eden Gardens on Monday, Gill and Sudharsan formed a formidable opening partnership, amassing 114 runs, with Sudharsan contributing 52 runs off 36 balls, making him the tournament's leading run-scorer. GT set a total of 198/3 before limiting KKR to 159/8, securing their position at the top of the points table.
“I’m very satisfied. We discussed these two matches, knowing they would play a crucial role in our standings. It’s great to achieve two consecutive victories. We aim to perform our best every time we step onto the field, without discussing who needs to bat till the end,” Gill stated.
“Our discussions revolve around scoring runs in these conditions and ensuring we can sustain the game. Although we were ahead, converting that into a win is the challenge. It’s tough to execute a flawless game in this format,” he added.
“There are always areas for improvement. For instance, had I batted longer, we could have added another 10 runs. We also had a few unforced errors in our bowling. The key takeaway is that even when not playing perfectly, finding a way to win is what we excel at,” Gill remarked during the post-match presentation.
This loss marked KKR's first consecutive defeats in IPL 2025, with captain Ajinkya Rahane acknowledging that chasing 199 was feasible but lamented the lack of solid starts from the openers. This season, KKR's openers have yet to achieve a 50-run partnership.
“I believed 199 was within our reach. We were competitive with the ball, but our opening starts have been a consistent struggle throughout the tournament. We need to adapt quickly. The pitch was slightly slow, but we anticipated that under 210 or even 200 would be a reasonable target,” Rahane assessed.
KKR encountered difficulties in the middle overs, which Rahane highlighted in his analysis. “We must improve our batting, particularly in the middle overs. Good starts from the openers are essential. No complaints regarding our bowling unit; they performed well. Our middle order is strong, and I have faith in them, but they need to be more aggressive. It was encouraging to see Angkrish perform well today. We wanted to promote our other batters in this situation,” he commented.
“This format requires bravery from batters. You can't dwell on past mistakes; instead, learn from them, seize opportunities, and maintain a positive outlook. If you're preoccupied with the fear of getting out, that's what will happen. Focus on scoring runs and hitting boundaries,” Rahane advised.
KKR also faced fielding errors, and Rahane acknowledged that a tighter performance could have made a difference. “Each game is an improvement. Yes, fielding is within our control; saving 15-20 runs can make a difference. It’s all about our attitude, and the players are putting in the effort,” he stated.
R Sai Kishore, GT’s left-arm spinner, mentioned that the pitch provided ample assistance and praised Rashid Khan for his figures of 2-25. “There was enough assistance from the wicket, especially in the second innings. Our total was excellent for defending. I aimed to vary my angles against Russell to create different deviations; the conditions allowed me to be aggressive,” he said.
“Rashid Khan is among the top T20 bowlers globally, and he’s regaining his wicket-taking ability. We always support him. Regardless of what’s said in the commentary, he remains the best T20 bowler worldwide. Our fielding was commendable today, and we’re continually addressing areas for improvement,” Kishore concluded.
