Bhubaneswar, April 28 (NationPress) Two matches, two clean sheets, and a quarter-final triumph in a penalty shootout—this is the impressive record of Jamshedpur FC's goalkeeper, Albino Gomes, in the Kalinga Super Cup 2025 thus far.
The 31-year-old custodian has delivered an outstanding performance this season for the Men of Steel, achieving a remarkable 102 saves across his 27 appearances in the Indian Super League, significantly contributing to his team's journey to the semi-finals. Although his exceptional skills have fortified the defense, Gomes candidly acknowledged his luck during the penalty shootout.
“I felt confident before the shootout, but it was my team that aided me significantly. They missed several penalties, which meant I didn’t have to make many saves. Nonetheless, I’m thrilled about our quarter-final win and the fact that we are just two matches away from claiming the trophy,” Gomes expressed to AIFF.com.
The allure of competing in Asia is a strong motivator for Gomes and his teammates, as the Red Miners aim to secure a spot in the AFC Champions League Two for the next season.
“Right now, we are focusing on one match at a time. The semi-final holds the utmost importance for us,” Gomes stated. “However, our ultimate ambition is to win the Kalinga Super Cup and earn qualification for the AFC Champions League Two next season.
While the Goa-born goalkeeper skillfully protects his goal, he has faced numerous challenges throughout his career, including a surprising title victory seven years ago with Aizawl FC, which won the I-League in 2016-17 during their second season in the top tier of Indian football.
The only connection between his I-League title-winning season and the present is his head coach, Khalid Jamil.
“He has shown immense faith in me. Even during the frustrating periods when I was just warming the bench and not getting game time, he was the one who believed in my potential to become a number one goalkeeper,” Gomes reminisced.
Despite enduring three significant injuries—two while with Delhi Dynamos FC and one at Kerala Blasters FC—the goalkeeper made a comeback after a nearly year-long layoff just three years ago. Now, he is enjoying one of the finest seasons of his career at Jamshedpur.
“It’s challenging for any footballer. Repeated injuries can lead to self-doubt,” he confessed. “Being mentally resilient is key to my recovery. There’s also the crucial role of physios and doctors.
“During such times, all one can do is stay strong, work on rehabilitation, and maintain a positive mindset. That’s the reality for all footballers and athletes,” he sighed.
As a goalkeeper, Gomes believes recovering from injury is akin to not being the primary keeper of a football team.
“It’s quite similar. Patience and consistent effort are essential. I was the fourth-choice goalkeeper when I transitioned from the Salgaocar youth setup to the senior team. I had to remain patient and wait for my opportunity. Thankfully, that moment eventually arrived,” he said, revealing that he initially started as a striker in school.
However, Albino Gomes has no regrets about his journey—“I love this position. It brings a different kind of pressure, and I thrive under it.”
