Stockholm, Oct 20 (NationPress) Graham Potter, the former manager of West Ham, has been named the new head coach of the Sweden national team.
The 50-year-old will serve in this capacity temporarily, with the goal of rejuvenating Sweden’s faltering hopes for World Cup qualification.
"I feel deeply honored by this opportunity, yet also greatly motivated. Sweden possesses exceptional players who perform in some of the world's top leagues weekly," Potter expressed regarding his new position.
"My responsibility is to establish the right conditions for our team to perform at the highest level and secure a spot in the World Cup next summer."
Sweden has been without a head coach since the removal of Jon Dahl Tomasson, who was let go following an unexpected 1-0 loss to Kosovo on October 13— a defeat that dashed their hopes for automatic qualification from Group B.
Nevertheless, not all is lost. Thanks to a strong performance in the 2024–25 UEFA Nations League, where they topped their group, Sweden still has a potential route to the play-offs, even without finishing in the top two.
Potter arrives in Stockholm following a challenging period at West Ham, where he was dismissed at the end of September. The Hammers managed only one victory in six games during the 2025–26 Premier League season, placing them in the relegation zone. Since his arrival in January, Potter recorded just six wins in 23 matches.
Despite the setbacks, Potter is still a highly regarded figure in Swedish football. He famously led Östersund from the fourth tier to Allsvenskan in just four years, clinching the Svenska Cupen in 2017. His coaching career also includes successful tenures at Swansea City and Brighton, along with a brief and tumultuous time at Chelsea in 2022.
Sweden fans are hopeful that Potter can reignite his magic and guide the team to a successful conclusion in their qualifying campaign.
