Ahmedabad, May 25 (NationPress) Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill characterized his team’s 83-run defeat against the Chennai Super Kings in their concluding league match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Narendra Modi Stadium as a bitter pill to swallow.
This loss puts GT’s ambitions of securing a spot among the top 2 in the points table in significant jeopardy. The victor of the upcoming clash between the Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings will surpass them in the standings, while a win for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru over the Lucknow Super Giants could potentially push GT further into the Eliminator zone.
Reflecting on the match, Gill, recently appointed as India’s Test captain, noted that the power-play in the first innings was where things spiraled out of control as CSK achieved their joint-best total.
"The match essentially slipped away from us during the power-play. We didn’t manage to regain control; 230 runs is a substantial target. Teams that are already out of contention play with nothing to lose. We struggled to maintain our composure under pressure," he stated during the post-match presentation.
"It’s crucial to manage runs during the middle overs. If you don’t take wickets, challenges will arise. This defeat will be tough to digest. On a positive note, we have two or three critical matches ahead. Luckily for me, I'll be returning to my hometown," added Gill, who is from Chandigarh, where the Challenger 1 and Eliminator matches will take place at the new PCA Stadium in Mullanpur.
Despite being one of the strongest teams in the initial two-thirds of the league phase, the Gujarat Titans ended their season with two consecutive losses.
Throughout the 2025 season, GT heavily depended on their explosive top three of Sai Sudharsan, Gill, and Jos Buttler, raising questions about their potential struggles if faced with early wickets.
CSK was the first team to capitalize on this at the Narendra Modi Stadium, and the outcome will raise concerns for the 2022 champions as they approach the playoffs.
Compounding the situation, reliable English batsman Jos Buttler will be absent from the playoffs due to national duties, creating a void in the top order. Buttler has accumulated 538 runs in 14 matches during the league phase.
