Gandhinagar, September 15 (NationPress) The launch of the national-level Chess competition for girls, part of the 54th National Sports Competition, was held at the PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya School No 1 in the city on Monday. The championship featured 216 female players from various Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) across the nation, competing in the Under-17 and Under-19 divisions.
The event commenced with the arrival of regional teams and guests from across India, who were greeted in a traditional manner. An eco-friendly atmosphere was established with the 'Deepshikha (Torch) Prajwalan' and 'Green Welcome'. The students also performed a welcome song, adding a musical touch to the proceedings.
The participating students expressed their enthusiasm and excitement about being part of this significant sporting event.
A student representing the Chandigarh region from Punjab said: "I feel incredibly happy and fortunate to be here."
The Chief Guest, Meena Joshi, Assistant Commissioner of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, stated: "We have 216 participants from 25 regions, accompanied by 25 escorts. This event aims to inspire our students to excel in sports too."
She highlighted the importance of discipline, unity, and mental development through sports.
The cultural performances captivated the audience while players took an oath to compete with dedication.
Vishwa Vasanwala, a renowned chess player and special guest, motivated the participants to shed their inhibitions and compete wholeheartedly. She is notably the first chess champion from Gujarat to represent India and has earned accolades for the nation, including a medal at the Asian Commonwealth.
"Today, I see a mini-India in Gandhinagar, with students from various states participating in this competition," she remarked.
It is noteworthy that PM SHRI is a centrally sponsored initiative aimed at enhancing over 14,500 schools for a thriving India, ensuring that every student feels welcomed and valued.
Approximately 834 KVs have been designated as PM SHRI Schools, with the scheme set to be implemented over five years until 2027.
