Surat, Jan 31 (NationPress) Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced on Saturday that during January, development initiatives exceeding Rs 4,870 crore have been launched throughout Gujarat. This progress exemplifies the government's dedication to timely governance and enhancing the quality of life.
While addressing an event in Surat, Patel inaugurated development projects worth Rs 173.78 crore from the Surat Municipal Corporation and laid the foundation for additional ventures valued at Rs 169 crore, totaling Rs 342 crore.
“Gujarat has adopted the work ethos championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where planning and implementation are so synchronized that foundation stones and inaugurations occur within the same governmental term,” the Chief Minister remarked.
He emphasized that the scale and velocity of these developments aim to directly assist the populace. “In just the first month of 2026, projects totaling over Rs 4,870 crore are being implemented to improve the living conditions for our citizens,” Patel stated.
During the occasion, the Chief Minister also inaugurated 1,304 revamped housing units within the Gotalawadi Tenement in the Katargam region, developed under the Public Housing Redevelopment Scheme-2016 through a public-private partnership.
He conducted a computerized lottery to assign the houses to eligible families. “Through public engagement, these households are now receiving safe, modern, and comfortable residences,” he noted.
Speaking at the newly erected Atal Bihari Vajpayee Auditorium in Dabholi, constructed at a cost of Rs 70 crore, Patel remarked that Surat has emerged as “an outstanding model of development, sanitation, and urbanization” in the nation.
He highlighted that Surat, recognized as the Diamond and Textile Capital, is also at the forefront of cleanliness, green mobility, and sustainable development.
“The urban development journey initiated in 2005 has positioned Gujarat as a benchmark for comprehensive development,” he stated.
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi remarked that equitable development across the city is the result of persistent efforts by the government and local governance.
“Every locality in Surat witnesses equal advancement, whether it’s Katargam, Varachha, or Mota Varachha,” he added, mentioning that the state's largest and most sophisticated library, currently being established in Katargam at a cost of Rs 70 crore, is set to open within three months.
He also stated, “These projects are meant for future generations, and it is the duty of every responsible citizen to safeguard and maintain public assets.”
Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil praised Surat's rapid development. “A city that once struggled with cleanliness has now become the top clean city in the country,” he noted, adding that the Rs 931 crore Tapi Purification Project has successfully halted industrial wastewater from Ukai to Surat from contaminating the Tapi River.
“By treating wastewater, the Municipal Corporation is generating significant revenue, which will only increase in the years ahead,” he said.
Mayor Daxesh Mavani reported that the Surat Municipal Corporation derives 28.5 percent of its energy from renewable sources, saving approximately Rs 10 crore annually.
“Our objective is to transform Surat into a 100 percent renewable energy Municipal Corporation by 2030,” he concluded.
