Gandhinagar, Aug 7 (NationPress) The Gujarat government is set to initiate diesel distribution for fishing boats on August 11, five days prior to the official commencement of the fishing season on August 16. This was confirmed by Fisheries Minister Raghavji Patel, who acknowledged the need for early supply.
This decision follows numerous requests from various fishermen’s organizations and leaders, who highlighted the importance of starting diesel distribution earlier to avoid the overwhelming rush and logistical challenges typically faced at ports on the first day of the fishing season.
“Historically, diesel distribution for boats commences on the inaugural day of the fishing season, resulting in traffic congestion at the ports and causing considerable delays and discomfort for the fishermen,” explained Minister Patel.
“To address this issue, and in response to the appeals from fishing associations throughout the state, the government has opted to commence diesel distribution five days in advance.”
The initiative aims to provide a seamless and stress-free start to the fishing season, enabling fishermen to refuel in a more organized and staggered manner. Gujarat hosts one of the largest and most dynamic fishing communities in India, significantly contributing to the state’s coastal economy.
With a coastline exceeding 1,600 km, the longest among Indian states, Gujarat is home to over 400,000 active fishermen, spread across more than 3,000 fishing villages in coastal districts such as Porbandar, Veraval (Gir Somnath), Jamnagar, Junagadh, Bhavnagar, Kutch, and Valsad.
The state boasts over 150,000 registered fishing boats, including mechanized, motorized, and traditional crafts, playing a vital role in marine fish production.
Gujarat ranks among India's top states for marine fish output and is a significant contributor to seafood exports, with fish and fish products shipped to markets in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the United States.
In addition to traditional fishing, the community is increasingly engaged in fish processing, aquaculture, and export-oriented units, supported by growing government initiatives.
Programs such as subsidized diesel, financial assistance for boat and net repairs, housing for fishermen, and the development of fishing harbors and jetties have been instrumental in modernizing the sector.
The state also encourages the formation of cooperative societies and women-led self-help groups (SHGs) to enhance economic participation within the fishing community.
