Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Friday, 15 May directed state authorities to conduct daily monitoring of petrol and diesel stocks through a dedicated control room mechanism, ensuring uninterrupted fuel supplies across Gujarat. The directive was issued during a cabinet meeting held in Gandhinagar following a comprehensive review of fuel availability and supply arrangements in the state.

What the Directive Entails

Government spokesperson and minister Jitu Vaghani confirmed that Chief Minister Patel had instructed officials to monitor fuel stocks every single day and maintain adequate supply systems to prevent inconvenience to citizens. Vaghani quoted Patel's directive: 'After reviewing the available stock of petrol and diesel in the state, the Chief Minister directed that daily monitoring be carried out through the control room and that supply arrangements be ensured as required.'

The state government clarified that no restrictions on fuel sales have been imposed. Officials reiterated that supply chains remain fully operational and that citizens should face no difficulty obtaining petrol or diesel under normal conditions.

Context: Panic Buying and Geopolitical Pressures

The decision comes amid heightened national attention on fuel availability, driven by geopolitical tensions in West Asia and recent social media-fuelled rumours of shortages. Last month, long queues were reportedly witnessed at several petrol pumps across Gujarat after circulating messages triggered panic buying — though authorities and oil companies maintained at the time that fuel stocks were sufficient.

This is not an isolated state-level concern. The Union government has repeatedly asserted that adequate stocks of petrol, diesel, and LPG are available nationally. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas had earlier established a 24x7 control room to monitor petroleum product supplies and stock positions across the country.

Centre-State Coordination on Fuel Security

According to the Centre, state governments are expected to play a key role in monitoring supply conditions and preventing hoarding or black marketing of essential commodities, including petroleum products. Gujarat's latest directive aligns with this federal framework, strengthening local oversight mechanisms to pre-empt disruptions during periods of elevated demand or public anxiety.

Chief Minister Patel reportedly stressed that fuel supply management must remain proactive, with officials maintaining regular oversight rather than reacting to shortfalls after they occur.

Other Cabinet Decisions

The cabinet meeting also reviewed broader administrative matters and public welfare initiatives. Ministers congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the successful completion of his Gujarat visit on 10 and 11 May, during which several public events were organised across the state.

With West Asia tensions showing no immediate sign of easing, the state's proactive monitoring posture is likely to remain in place through the coming weeks.
