Key Takeaways
Surat/Gandhinagar, March 12 (NationPress) The Gujarat government is enhancing its laboratory infrastructure statewide to guarantee that residents have access to safe food and high-quality medicines, as stated by Health Minister Praful Pansheriya in the state Assembly on Thursday.
In response to inquiries about food and drug testing facilities, Pansheriya announced that a new state-of-the-art Food and Drug Laboratory is being constructed in Surat.
"To ensure that residents receive pure food and effective medicines, Gujarat is augmenting its laboratory network across the state. Currently, we are in the process of establishing a new Food and Drug Laboratory in Surat that will be equipped with cutting-edge facilities," he remarked.
This laboratory is being developed with a total investment of Rs 50 crore, of which Rs 17 crore has been allocated in the current state budget.
A plot of 2,500 square metres has been designated for the project, and the architectural plans have already been approved.
The facility will span six floors and include a two-storey basement parking area, with specialized laboratories on each level dedicated to microbiology, chemical, and cosmetic testing of food and pharmaceuticals.
Modern testing equipment will be installed, along with extensive parking and registration amenities.
Pansheriya further noted that administrative consent has been granted for the establishment of new laboratories in Ahmedabad, Mehsana, Junagadh, and Valsad.
He stressed that these new facilities will alleviate the burden on the Central Laboratory in Vadodara and facilitate quicker sample testing.
"The inauguration of these laboratories will significantly bolster the state's initiative against adulteration, ensuring the health of its citizens is prioritized," he stated.
This initiative is part of the Gujarat government's broader strategy to improve food safety and confirm that medications meet quality benchmarks, addressing increasing public health and consumer protection concerns.
The efforts are also in response to previous instances of adulteration within the state.
