Bhubaneswar, Sep 27 (NationPress) The Commissionerate Police has apprehended a notorious criminal involved in the illicit trade of firearms across multiple districts within the state, as confirmed by Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissioner of Police S. Dev Datta Singh on Saturday.
In a statement to the press, the Police Commissioner remarked: "The ongoing operation targeting illegal firearms, which resulted in the confiscation of eight semi-automatic weapons about ten days ago, indicated that further actions would follow. In this regard, we successfully seized ten additional semi-automatic weapons and arrested the accused gunrunner who was attempting to sell these firearms."
Singh elaborated that these firearms were intended for use in the state capital and its neighboring districts. He expressed confidence that the police will continue to achieve success in combating criminal activities through such operations against the illegal firearms trade.
The suspect has been identified as Shaikh Nadim, 31, from Itatikiri village under the jurisdiction of Krushna Nandapur police station in Jagatsinghpur district.
In addition to the semi-automatic pistols, authorities also confiscated 18 rounds of live ammunition, ten magazines, a mobile phone, and a motorcycle.
According to police sources, acting on a tip-off, the Special Crime Unit of Commissionerate Police successfully tracked the suspect Shaikh Nadim, who was attempting to distribute sophisticated weapons to local dealers.
“He had been under surveillance for a month. Following specific information on September 27, a team from CSU led by Dy. CP Anup Kanungo apprehended him near Dhauli Junction around 5 a.m. as he was heading to Bhubaneswar from Puri on his motorcycle,” police sources reported.
Reports indicate that the accused, Nadim, was previously involved in several criminal cases in various districts of the state.
In April 2019, he was reportedly arrested by the Kendrapara Police during an encounter.
It is noteworthy that the Commissionerate police have also apprehended three additional gunrunners, including one from Jharkhand, and seized eight semi-automatic pistols, 34 rounds of live ammunition, and ten magazines.
