Gwalior hilltop murder: Missing complaint cracks gang-rape, burning of 15-year-old
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A missing person complaint filed at Mau police station in Bhind led investigators to uncover the gang-rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl whose partially burnt and mutilated body was recovered from a hilltop above Navgrah Temple in Gwalior on 1 June. Three accused — Ramu Gurjar, Arun, and Gaurav Kushwah — have been taken into custody, police confirmed on Monday.
How the Case Unravelled
The victim's family from Bhind approached Mau police after the minor failed to return home on 28 May. They named Ramu Gurjar, a local resident allegedly in a relationship with the girl, as a suspect. Acting on the complaint, joint teams from Gwalior and Mau police detained Gurjar on Monday.
During interrogation, Gurjar initially misled investigators. He confessed only after being confronted with call records, according to police. He disclosed that he had lured the girl to Gwalior on his motorcycle on 28 May, accompanied by his accomplice Arun.
The Crime: What Police Say Happened
According to police, the two accused took the minor to a secluded spot on the hill above Navgrah Temple, under Janakganj Police Station limits, where they gang-raped her. When she resisted and attempted to return home, they assaulted her further.
Investigators found that Gurjar allegedly attempted to sell the girl to Arun for ₹50,000. When the victim witnessed the transaction and tried to raise an alarm, both accused strangled her to death and concealed the body in bushes, police said.
Evidence Destroyed the Following Day
On 29 May, Gurjar and Arun returned to the site with a third person, Gaurav Kushwah, to destroy evidence. The three allegedly doused the body with petrol and set it ablaze before fleeing, according to police.
'Acting on the information provided by the accused, Ramu Gurjar, the Janakganj police team proceeded to the hilltop situated above the Navgrah Temple, where they recovered the victim's partially burnt and mutilated body on Monday,' said CSP (Lashkar) Kiran Ahirwar.
Charges and Investigation Status
CSP Ahirwar confirmed the charred remains were recovered on 1 June. 'The main accused, Ramu Gurjar and Arun, along with Gaurav Kushwah, who assisted in burning the body, have been taken into custody. A case has been registered against the accused under charges of rape, the murder of a minor, and the concealment/destruction of evidence,' Ahirwar stated.
Further investigation is underway to gather additional forensic and digital evidence, the officer added. The case highlights the critical role that missing person complaints play in surfacing crimes that may otherwise go unreported.
