Chandigarh, April 28 (NationPress) The 16th Finance Commission convened an essential consultation meeting in Chandigarh, bringing together legislators from both the ruling and Opposition parties in Haryana. Prominent Congress MLA and former Minister, Ashok Arora, was among the key figures who actively engaged, presenting significant recommendations regarding budget allocations and governance challenges faced by the state.
Arora emphasized the critical necessity for increased investment in health, education, and urban infrastructure.
“The Finance Commission sought our insights on Haryana’s financial status. We proposed that the budgets for health and education should be bolstered to cater to the escalating public demands,” he shared with IANS.
Touching on Haryana’s fiscal difficulties, he remarked, “The state's total budget stands at Rs 2 lakh crore, with approximately 32% allocated to debt repayments and interest. We have advised a one-time settlement to alleviate this debt burden and liberate funds for developmental projects.”
Arora expressed concerns regarding the intensifying urban pressures within the state. “Haryana is bordered by Delhi on three sides, resulting in rapid urbanization in these areas. This gives rise to challenges pertaining to drinking water and sewage management. We have advocated for increased funding for the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) Department to tackle these issues,” he stated.
Additionally, he suggested relaxing the eligibility criteria under the ‘Mahagram Yojana’. “Currently, only villages with populations exceeding 10,000 qualify for sewer lines under this initiative. This threshold should be reduced so that more villages can avail of the benefits,” he noted.
On a political front, Arora declared that the Congress party would ramp up its public engagement efforts.
“The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has outlined a 40-day initiative concerning the 'Samvidhan Bachao' rally. We will carry it out in Haryana as well under the banner of the ‘Samvidhan Bachao Andolan’,” he mentioned.
Criticizing recent statements from ruling party officials, Arora remarked, “The remarks directed at constitutional institutions are not mere coincidence — they are part of a larger conspiracy. We Congress members will galvanize public support to counter this alarming trend.”
He welcomed the Finance Commission’s decision to directly consult elected officials, asserting it would foster more effective and inclusive policymaking.
