Kolkata, July 25 (NationPress) - A driver operating through a mobile app was apprehended by the police in Kolkata on Friday for allegedly attacking a female passenger after she declined to pay him additional fare. The incident occurred in the Salt Lake region on the northern periphery of Kolkata in the afternoon, following a formal complaint lodged by the victim.
The individual in question has been named as Shahbaz Ali. A case has been filed against him under sections 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 74 (assault or criminal force to a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
A police official familiar with the situation stated that the woman had summoned an app-based cab from Baguihati to visit a friend in the DF Block of Salt Lake. Upon reaching her destination, the driver began to demand extra payment. When the passenger refused to comply, a dispute ensued.
“After exiting the vehicle, the driver continued to harass her. She had already paid the fare as indicated in the app. The driver confronted her, twisted her arm, and even kicked her in the stomach,” the police reported.
After the altercation, the woman contacted the police and filed a formal complaint against the driver. “The driver was taken into custody on Friday, and a case has been registered under the pertinent sections. We are actively investigating the incident,” stated the police officer.
Sources indicate that the accused driver hails from Narayanpur-Paschimpara in the South 24 Parganas district. His vehicle has been confiscated to facilitate further investigation.
