Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 5 (NationPress) A well-known social media influencer from Kolkata was taken into custody on Thursday evening following allegations of forcibly detaining and molesting his girlfriend. The influencer, recognized as Shamik Adhikary, who is popularly known as ‘Nonsane’, has amassed a considerable following on various platforms.
The 22-year-old woman reported that he held her against her will in his residence for nearly 20 hours.
During this period, she asserted she was subjected to physical assault and threats.
Subsequently, she lodged a formal complaint with the authorities.
As per the police, the accused is from Behala, and the complainant is his girlfriend.
On February 2, she visited the influencer’s residence due to their friendship.
She claimed he unlawfully confined her from 9:30 p.m. that night until 5 p.m. the next day.
During this time, she alleged that he hit and punched her.
She also contended that he inappropriately touched her and tugged at her clothing.
The two were reportedly embroiled in an argument over a matter, during which the accused also allegedly issued threats.
On Wednesday, the young woman filed a written complaint at the Behala police station in south Kolkata.
Following the complaint, the police registered an FIR against the social media influencer under Sections 127(2), 115(2), 74, and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The influencer was apprehended on Thursday.
He boasts a significant presence on Facebook, with around 32,000 followers, along with over 1,000 followers on Instagram.
Since the allegations emerged, his followers have expressed their outrage on social media platforms.
As of now, the accused has not released any public comment.
He is recognized as a critic of the state government and has previously shared content highlighting the safety and security of women in the region.
In response to his arrest, BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya criticized the administration for allegedly targeting social media personalities.
“West Bengal under Mamata Banerjee has devolved into a dictatorial regime, where legitimate criticism is countered not with facts or reforms, but with false, malicious FIRs and fabricated cases.
“One after another, activists and voices that embarrass the Trinamool Congress are being targeted, facing relentless character assassination, intimidation, and police action,” Malviya stated in a social media post.
“A social media influencer whose video drew attention to the dangers women face in Bengal has suddenly been accused of assaulting a female friend. The timing of this alleged incident remains unclear.
“No one knows why the so-called victim did not come forward sooner. There are no details available to the public. Yet, a complaint is filed, perfectly timed,” he commented.
Malviya further condemned senior Trinamool Congress leaders for allegedly participating in the character assassination of the influencer.
“This is the TMC’s governance model: suppress free speech, intimidate critics, weaponize law enforcement, and tarnish reputations to cling to power.
“But Bengal is attentive. And Bengal will not remain silent. The BJP will support every individual victimized by Mamata Banerjee’s regime.
“Alongside the people of West Bengal, we will overcome fear, expose misuse of power, and restore democracy. This is not justice; this is political persecution. And it will come to an end,” he added.
