Pune, Feb 27 (NationPress) As law enforcement continues to search for the suspect involved in the sexual assault of a woman at a bus depot in Pune, another case of molestation emerged on Thursday. A young IT professional was reportedly harassed by a cab driver, who has since been taken into custody.
The incident involved a woman employed at an IT firm in Maharashtra's Pune, where the driver made obscene gestures towards her via the front mirror.
In a panic, the woman leapt from the cab and ran nearly two kilometers to the Khadki police station to file her complaint.
Police officials revealed that the incident occurred on February 21, leading to the arrest of the cab driver, identified as Sumit Kumar, a resident of Uttar Pradesh.
In a related series of events, social activist Trupti Desai and her supporters attempted to block the convoy of Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam, who was en route to the Swargate bus depot where the previous sexual assault occurred.
Both Desai and her supporters were promptly detained by the Pune Police.
Desai expressed her concerns, stating, "The suspect in the Swargate rape case remains unapprehended. Those exercising their right to protest are being arrested. Yogesh Kadam arrived here after a delay of 50 hours. We wanted to query him about the ongoing situation in the state, but police intervention prevented us from doing so."
She criticized the police for their inaction and questioned the efficacy of the Rs 1 lakh reward offered for information leading to the apprehension of Dattatray Gade.
“Are you waiting for Gade to surrender? Women have experienced sleepless nights. Today, women, children, and girls feel unsafe. Even with the government's announcement of a 50% discount on state transport bus fares, safety remains a concern,” she asserted.
“Minister Yogesh Kadam is a public servant. In a democracy, we have the right to inquire. However, we were denied the opportunity to meet him. The Pune police have failed in their duties. They must arrest the suspect swiftly; otherwise, we may have to take matters into our own hands,” Desai concluded.
