Mumbai, Feb 27 (NationPress) NCP-SP Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule on Thursday brought attention to an earlier letter from the Swargate bus depot chief in Maharashtra's Pune addressed to the police concerning the depot's security situation. This comes after a woman was sexually assaulted on a bus at the depot.

Sule emphasized that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the home minister position, must urgently reassess the law and order in Pune and implement stringent measures for both women’s safety and the protection of bus stations.

Her call to action arose a day after a 26-year-old woman was raped aboard a bus operated by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) at the Swargate depot. Sule described the incident as alarming and insisted that the chief minister should organize a meeting promptly, especially since the Swargate depot chief had communicated with the Pune police about the need to address the harassment of passengers by private agents and other anti-social elements.

In her post on X, Sule shared the letter from the Swargate bus depot chief to the police, stating, "Following the sexual assault incident on a young woman at the Swargate bus station, significant concerns regarding law and order have emerged. The depot chief has repeatedly contacted the police administration about private agents and other anti-social elements harassing passengers, yet there seems to be a lack of action. The Swargate bus station is a bustling hub, and the police should maintain heightened vigilance. It's disheartening that the depot chief's correspondence is seemingly disregarded. The state home minister must urgently evaluate the law and order in Pune and enforce strict measures to ensure women's safety and the security of the bus station."

Additionally, Neelam Gorhe, deputy chairperson of the Maharashtra Legislative Council and founder of Stree Aadhar Kendra, has urged the police and transport department to establish women's vigilance committees at all state bus stations to bolster women's safety.

Gorhe, who visited the Swargate bus depot and the bus where the assault occurred, has also recommended increasing the number of security personnel at bus depots and ensuring that CCTV footage is regularly monitored, particularly during nighttime.

In the meantime, the Pune police have assembled 13 teams to apprehend Dattatray Gade, a history-sheeter linked to the bus rape case. An award of Rs 100,000 has been announced for information leading to Gade's capture, as he remains at large.
