Mumbai, Feb 28 (NationPress) Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Friday that the suspect involved in the Pune bus rape incident has been apprehended. The police are set to conduct a thorough investigation utilizing technical and forensic evidence.
The investigation will uncover the sequence of events and additional details, he stated.
“The police have detained the suspect, who was in hiding. However, the police successfully located him through advanced technologies. Soon, the complete incident will be disclosed. The Police Commissioner has shared some insights regarding the case, but divulging further information at this point would be inappropriate. All details will be made available following the investigation,” he mentioned.
CM Fadnavis also noted, "It is too early to make any statements right now. The suspect will be held in custody. An investigation will follow thereafter."
The Pune Police arrested Dattatray Gade, the alleged perpetrator in the Swargate rape case, around 1:30 a.m. on Friday. He was found in a sugarcane farm in Gunat village within Shirur taluka, where he had been hiding. A total of 13 teams, comprising over 500 personnel and a dog squad, were deployed to locate Gade, who had been on the run since Tuesday after assaulting a 26-year-old woman on a bus at the Swargate bus depot.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Nikhil Pingle led the operation that resulted in Gade's arrest and subsequently transferred him to Swargate police for further investigation.
According to police sources, an extensive search was initiated to capture Gade in his home village, Gunat. Police units from the crime branch, drone unit, and dog squad from adjacent districts were involved. DCP Pingle confirmed that local villagers aided the police during Gade's search.
The police commissioner, Amritesh Kumar, stated that the initial medical evaluation of the suspect showed visible rope marks on his neck, suggesting a possible suicide attempt. The suspect has admitted to this, but his attempt failed as the rope broke, and help arrived shortly after. A team will investigate whether he genuinely attempted suicide.
In the meantime, CM Fadnavis commented on Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam’s remark suggesting that the victim showed no resistance during the incident on the Shivshahi bus. Due to the lack of resistance, there were no suspicions raised.
“Yogesh Kadam’s statement was misconstrued. The Swargate bus depot is located in a busy area with numerous individuals present. The bus where the incident occurred was parked outside. Kadam was implying that the public did not notice any resistance,” the Chief Minister explained.
He further advised, "Kadam is a new Minister. Hence, my suggestion to him is to exercise greater sensitivity while discussing such matters. Any misstep in communication can adversely affect public perception.”
CM Fadnavis also had a word for Textile Minister Sanjay Savkare, who previously remarked that "such occurrences are not exclusive to Pune but happen elsewhere in the country." The CM urged him to be more considerate in his statements regarding such incidents.
